The name of the Battalion Commander killed in Thursday’s shooting at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina has been released. He is 42-year-old Lt. Col. Roy Tisdale. According to WCTI 12 News, Col. Tisdale commanded the 525th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade Special Troops Battalion. A second victim had minor injuries and was treated and released. He is Spc. Michael E. Latham, a signal support system specialist. The shooting suspect broke from the unit formation, walked up to his commander and pulled his pistol without warning. He shot Tisdale three times in the head and once in the chest. Other soldiers rushed the suspected shooter, who sustained a head injury in the process. Latham received a minor gunshot wound during the scuffle. The suspect shooter is still listed as having “life threatening” injuries and is not expected to survive. He is still unidentified and no information was released as to whether the weapon was military issue or privately owned. It would be highly unlikely that the weapon was military issue as the unit’s weapons are under lock and key, to be issued normally for firearms training. According to the Los Angeles Times, the shooting suspect is a specialist who was up for a court-martial. He is suspected of stealing a toolbox worth about $2,000 from one of the base motor pools. The specialist had with the deceased battalion commander’s in Afghanistan as part of the commander’s security detail. The investigating Special Agents are from the Army Criminal Investigation Command. The shooting occurred at what a normal pre-holiday safety briefing that was held about two blocks from unit headquarters. The safety briefing is a common way to encourage good and safe conduct before upcoming holidays. The Fourth of July holiday present special risk of injury, over consumption of alcohol and a variety of auto, fireworks and sporting accidents. A Battalion is under a Brigade and is generally commanded by a Lt. Colonel. The battalion was only recently activated in January and is a highly advanced intelligence and reconnaissance unit. Lt. Col. Tisdale took command of the unit when it was activated. He was a graduate of Texas A&M University and was commissioned as an infantry officer. According to the Army Times, his awards included “Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Afghanistan and Iraq campaign medals, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge and Senior Parachutist Badge,” According to NBC News, Col. Kevin Arata is spokesman for Fort Bragg.
